In This Example of The Use of Music in Writing a Screenplay, I’ve Jumped Ahead in the Story… But The Music’s really the thing. Using a Non-Formatted, Non-Edited Screenplay that I started back in 2005.
O.S. = Off Screen
V.O. = Voice Of
EXT. = Outside
INT. = Inside
TEARS FOR FEARS
(This Was a Working Title only)
A Screenplay

(2005)
JOHN – “Hey… Where are those guys going…”
(Quarter pause)
PETER – “Umm… I think they’re just going to cruise around town and stuff…”
“Maybe grab some lunch…”
John jumps up, and grabs his jacket.
JOHN – “Lets go with them…”
John passes by Pete and heads towards the door.
PETER – “Umm… Ok…”
EXT. THE CABIN – DRIVEWAY
John and Peter suddenly come out of the cabin…
…and jump into the back of Brett’s Jeep.
Ash and Josh are in front, with Brett driving…
…with Sarah in back.
Ash seems surprised.
John looks at Sarah.
JOHN – “Hi…”
He than looks over at Pete who is smiling, and shakes his head.
SARAH – “Hi…”
BRETT – “Well alright than…”
Brett throws on the radio
.
(Tears for Fears: Everybody Wants to Rule the World)
CLOSE UP
Ash smiles.
EXT. TOWN – BRETT’S JEEP
They drive into town.
After driving around for a bit, they walk on the sidewalk, heading for somewhere to eat.
Ash walks next to John.
And Pete next to Sarah and Brett.
Pete keeps trying to get Sarah’s attention from Brett.
John and Ash laugh at them.
Ash looks at John who is smiling.
ASH – “So listen… About last night—“
JOHN – “It’s ok…”
ASH – “No… I…”
She drops her head a bit.
ASH – “Let’s just say I was the first love who got left in my story…”
JUMPING AHEAD IN THE STORY AGAIN
EXT. – RESTAURANT
Brett is telling a loud, drunk story.
Brett – “So than the guy has the gull to bring us a check…”
Sarah laughs.
Pete fake laughs.
John elbow’s Pete.
Brett – “I couldn’t believe it…”
Pete leans forward.
PETER – “And neither can we…”
Pete holds up his drink to Brett.
John gets behind him, and noogies his head.
John – “I’ve had about enough out of you fellow…”
Ash laughs, well John takes note of how beautiful she looks in the sunlight.
Ash notices that John is looking at her.
And she takes a piece of hair out of her mouth, and than smiles at him.
CLOSE UP
FANTASY – SLOW MOTION (Coldplay: A Rush of Blood to the Head)
John imagines taking Ash into his arms and touching her cheek.
She smiles, and wraps her arms around her…
…they kiss
FANTASY MOVES ON
John and Ash walking in a beautiful field.
A light yellow light covers the field.
Pollen fills the air.
He falls on the ground.
She lands on top of him.
JOHN FLASHES TO SECOND FANTASY
A man stands in a dark doorway.
MAN – “You can’t fall in love again John…”
EXT. THE FIELD
John suddenly looks up into nothingness.
ASH – “What is it John…”
INT. THE DOORWAY
MAN – “You’ll only get hurt again…”
EXT. FIELD
John starts to tear up a bit.
Ash touches his face.
EXT. RESTAURANT (Present)
Ash is touching his John’s face.
He jumps.
ASH – “What is it John…”
John looks around.
Than stands up.
PETER – “What’s up man…”
JOHN – “I gotta go…”
John steps away from the table.
Peter stands up…
PETER – “He’ll be alright… I’ll be right back…”
INT. RESTAURANT (Enigma: Look of Today)
John walks briskly through the restaurant.
Pete follows.
EXT. THE RESTAURANT – EXIT
John steps out of the door, and just starts walking into the parking lot.
Pete comes out, and follows.
John doesn’t see a car pulling into the parking lot.
Peter suddenly grabs him, and pulls him out of harms way.
PETER – “You alright man…”
John is crying a bit.
JOHN – “I can’t do this man…”
THAT’S ALL FOR NOW…
I SHALL CONTINUE ONCE MORE SOON
