“The Next Big Thing” Challenge

“The Next Big Thing” Challenge

First of all, I’d Like to Thank Paige Addams for Tagging Me with this Challenge.

I think it’s Pretty Cool, and Look forward to doing it.

Here are the rules:

1) Give credit to the one(s) who tagged you.

2) Answer the following questions about your latest work in progress.

3) Tag five other authors and let them know you’ve tagged them.

5 Authors I’m Tagging; (Well, 2 Anyway, Lol)

1) Terrii Wachala @ Brautigan’s Girl

2) Shannon @ Isle of Books

I’m only Tagging 2, as Paige actually Tagged a couple of the one’s I would have Tagged, and I would have also Tagged Her… I know several other Great Writers, but I’m not sure they’re working on specific projects.

My Chosen Piece Of Work;

I’m going to go ahead and go with My Next Project that I will be Self Publishing, “Chess With Agatha“.

1) What is the title of your book?

“Chess With Agatha”

2) Where did the idea come from for the book?

Hmm… That’s a kind of tough question… I started Blogging, and Pursuing Writing as a Profession in August, 2011 (Book Writing that is, I did pursue Screenplay Writing from 2003-2005).

In October-November, 2011, I created another Blog Specifically for Writing a Childhood Concept of a Fantasy Novel, and it was going very well… But then a Brand New Idea came to me (Chess With Agatha)… And I decided to Write it. But, because it was moving into the Holidays, I decided I would start this Project Come January, 2013… And give myself until June to Complete the First of what I hoped would be a Trilogy of Books. I have to say, one specific thing didn’t give me the idea of this book… The Story just came to me. It probably started with the Character of Agatha, and then Blended with many of the things that I Like/Love about the Fantasy Genre… Like… Dragons… Knights and Wizards. I also throw in some Mythical Creatures like Minotaurs, and Unicorns for Good Measure. I Imagine the whole thing likely came from the ‘Essence of Fantasy’ within myself, as I don’t think this book is much like any others… Well, aside from the whole “Unlikely Group on a Dangerous Quest” kind of thing, Lol

3) What genre does your book fall under?

4) Which actors/actresses would you choose to play your characters in a movie?

Surprisingly, this is kind of tough. Though because I was Pursuing Film Making prior to ever pursuing Writing Books… And also pursuing Screenplay Writing… I admit, that most of the Stories I Write appear to me as ‘Movies’ in My Head… But with “Chess With Agatha”, it really felt specifically like a Book when writing it.

However lately, as I’ve been missing Film Making, my books have been crossing my mind in a different way, and I have been thinking a bit about such things.

Agatha; I’m not sure I have a ‘specific’ Actress in mind to play Agatha… Her Character is a 17 year old, blonde (almost white blonde), blue eyed girl… But in the story her hair frequently changes completely to black. So it could definitely be a light, or dark haired actress. It would have to be a Very Strong Actress, who is also very full of Light. Not in an ‘airy’ way… But more like how Ewen Mcgregor’s Obi Wan Character just seemed like he was full of light to me.

Agamemnon; Clive Owen might be good in this role as the Dark Mysterious Stranger who ends up being Agatha’s Guardian after losing her adopted parents just prior to where our story begins.

The Blue Wizard Hemingbyrd; It’s funny, like I say, I really haven’t thought of Actors in regards to this Story… But I do think Tobey Maguire would make an Awesome Blue Wizard Hemingbyrd… He’s a very Wise, and Quirky Character, and Tobey would play him hilariously.

Also, he has White Hair, and Lavender Eyes, which would make him look different, and cool.

Iliad (The Fool); James McAvoy would probably be Perfect as the bobbling, singing, pessimistic, yet lovable Fool. Who tends to shed his cowardace ways when it comes to being Protective of Agatha.

Morr (The Vampire); Another tough one to Cast… But he’s Dark Haired, fair skinned, and with a Medium Build. He would need to be the kind of Actor that can Act without even saying a word. He’d definitely need a seserious presence.

Jodan (The Werewolf); He’d need to be Tall, and Strong… Perhaps a bit Scragly, but also an Air of Nobility.

I’ll leave it at that for now… Funny, for someone that Loves Film as much as I do, it was definitely a bit challenging to Cast This Book… Perhaps some of the Roles would be played by New Talent.

5) How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Well, like I say, I gave myself from January to June, 2013 to Complete it. The only reason it took this long was because I Wrote Each of the Chapters as Posts on My Blog. I wasn’t in a Rush to Finish it, I just fit it into my Regular Posting Schedule.

6) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Hmm… Well… As Much as I Love Fantasy, and Love Writing, I’m not really all that much of a Reader. Sadly, when I try to Read, I generally start to give myself a hard time, like, “You should Be Writing, not Reading” in my head, Lol

Or, I get sleepy, which sucks.

I will tell you that when I was younger, I read “The Sword of Shannara” and Loved it… But this Book is nothing like it. Also, I Loved The Movie “Time Bandits” when I was a kid… Which does have a Minotaur in it… But once again, is really nothing like this story.

“The Neverending Story”, and “Clash of the Titans” were also good… But once again, nothing like this story.

For the most part, I felt this Story was Fairly Original… Maybe not in certain fundamental ways… But I definitely Feel that My Characters are My Own.

7) Who or what inspired you to write this book?

I’d have to say the ‘Fantasy’ Genre itself inspired me to Write this Book… All the Books and Movies I’ve seen over the years. I’ve always Loved the Genre… Such a ‘Limitless’ set of parameters for a Writer.

8) What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? How about a teaser?

This Book is about A Daughters Love/Connection to Her Father (Whether she’s met him, or not), Adventure, Friendship, Courage, Inner Strength, The Family You’re Born With, and The Family That You Create Through The People You Meet In Your Life. But it’s also about Dragons, Knights, Magic and Mythical Creatures… If any of these things ‘Pique’ your Interest, then I feel there’s something in this book for you.

A Teaser… Hmm

I’ll Give you Chapter 8 (But I have to warn you, this is completely unedited, Lol)

Table Manners

Sitting at the long royal dining table is The Blue Wizard Hemmingbyrd, The bearded Jodan, and the fair skinned, dark haired Morr…

Meanwhile, Iliad the Fool is sitting atop a nearby vase table, legs crossed, apparently mumbling to himself.

Hemmingbyrd attempts to make light conversation.

“Well then… Hadenworb” he spoke.

Which of course means, “She should be here any moment”. But only Iliad understands him.

Suddenly Agatha enters the dining hall, her golden hair gleaming, and blue eyes glowing, as she makes her way to the table.

She’s wearing a sky blue lace dress, covered by her ever present long black coat, and of course let’s not forget her black, stomping Doc Martin boots.

Instantly her gaze falls upon Morr who sits silently dressed in all black, save his maroon velvet vest…

She notes that he is looking at an ornate glass of dark red drink, and stirring it oh so slightly with one of his fingers.

Her eyes then make their way to Jodan, a large, dark brown grizzly bearded fellow, who seems to make a half sort of smile at her as she comes.

Hemmingbyrd quickly leaps to his feet and brings her to her chair “There you are my Lady… I hope that your accommodations are quite satisfying…” he blurts out friendlily.

“They’re fine thank you” she replies, and sits next to Hemmingbyrd, who is sitting directly across from Jodan and Morr.

“This is Jodan…” Hemmingbyrd motions towards Jodan.

“Greetings my Lady” he darkly replies, in his gravelly voice.

“And this is… Morr” Hemmingbyrd says, speaking so low, that one can hardly hear him.

With this Morr looks up from his drink, his eyes are wholly black, but glisten yellow for just a moment, as he maniacally grins just slightly.

With this Agatha’s blue eyes darken, and she loses her breath for a moment.

“A Vampire??? Morr is a… Vampire??” she thinks to herself.

“Is this some kind of a sick joke…” she finishes.

“I’m afraid not” Hemmingbyrd speaks to her in her mind, and she quickly looks at him, as he appears to be enjoying his salad.

“Delicious salad is it not?” Hemmingbyrd suddenly speaks, turns, and smiles at Agatha.

Meanwhile Iliad is pretending not to pay attention, but is completely focused on Agatha.

“Sooo…” Agatha starts to speak “You’re a blood sucker, eh?” she suddenly says, and Morr leaps to his feet, his fingernails digging into the table, and eyes glowing yellow.

Hemmingbyrd quickly stands and waves his hands about “Woe, Woe, Woe now… Let’s not start things out on a bad note” he says.

With this Morr sits back down, drinks his full glass of… Blood… And then turns the cup upside down with a.

“My Lady… It is not such a good idea to anger Morr” Hemmingbyrd reaches out to Agatha’s mind once more.

Agatha then looks over at Jodan “And I suppose you’re a Werewolf…” she speaks half mockingly.

With this the whole room goes silent.

“We prefer… Lycanthrope, my Lady” Jodan replies as he continues to feast upon his very rare, and very large steak.

With this Agatha stands straight up “Are you kidding??!! You ARE a Werewolf!!??” with this Hemmingbyrd pulls at her arm, bringing her back to her seat.

Morr than stands “You best learn some manners my Lady…” he hisses at her.

In the background Iliad can vaguely be heard saying “Nevermind that she’s the Princess of this fortress, and by all rights, the current Queen…”.

With this all look at Iliad who continues to mumble to himself.

Suddenly Agatha jumps up on the table, almost as if possessed, her hair then turns to black, as she sticks her left arm outwardly towards the room’s entrance, where Agamemnon’s dark cherry red cane suddenly flies into the room, and into her hand.

From it she draws forth a brilliant silver blade, and holds the tip of it to Morr’s neck.

By now Jodan is standing “She is of Elias’s Blood…” he simply states.

But before Agatha can do anything, Morr is behind her with light like speed, grabs a chair, and swings it at her back, but just as he does…

BWAM!!!!A yellow shield surrounds Agatha’s body, and Morr is blown back against the dining hall’s wall.

“Ooommff!” and falls to the floor.

With this Hemmingbyrd quickly looks at the now glowing yellow ring on her finger, from which the shield appears to have come.

Hemmingbyrd looks at Iliad “You gave her the ring I gave you??”.

With this Iliad at last looked up from his mumblings and simply says “I thought dinner might get a bit… Messy”.

Agatha’s hair turns back to golden blond, and her eyes dim a bit “Ok what just happened to me” she speaks before falling to the table and passing out.

“Odenbray” speaks Hemmingbyrd as he slaps his forehead.

“Tomorrow we’re eating out”.
