CHAPTER XIII – Consorting with Dragon

Deep in the High Peaks of Hyrand… Within the Darkness of a Great Cave… A Dragon speaks.

“Where is my Mother…” the voice echoes and rumbles the very cave walls.

Also standing within the darkness, but holding a dark blue lantern of light, is Baron Braug’s Sorcerer Onddos… Some ten feet behind him is Baron Braug.

“You are all that remains of the Dragon Kind Tor’Hum…” Onddos imparts, his voice shaking slightly.

“ARROGANT HUMAN!! HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS??!!” Tor’Hum shakes the walls even further with his harrowing voice.

Onddos grows exceedingly pale, as his knees begin to quiver.

Tor’Hum then calms once more “To what was her end…” he inquires.

Onddos looks back at Lord Braug who is pensively watching, then back at Tor’Hum.

“Well… We don’t exactly… know” Onddos timidly admits.

“IGNORANT FOOL!!!” Tor’Hum’s temper rises once more “YOU DARE SUMMON ME TO STRIKE DOWN THE LEADER OF THE HUMANS, AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW IF I AM THE LAST DRAGON ALIVE!!!” with this a giant claw stretches into the blue light, and snatches up Onddos…

“AHHH!!! PLEASE!!! NO!!!” Onddos calls out as Tor’Hum’s breath heats the sorcerer’s body, and his great yellow eyes can be seen through the dark.

With this Baron Braug steps forward, picking up the blue magical lantern.

“Well that’s just it Tor’Hum… Isn’t it” he speaks excessively calmly. “Your kind has been gone so long, we know nothing beyond the Myths our ancestors have left us behind.

Tor’Hum calms again, and sets the Sorcerer down. “And what of the Wizard Heirs of Warnlock” Tor’Hum demands.

“There are two left… My Lord…” Oddos speaks. “And there is a great feud between them… In fact, none have laid eyes on the 2nd Heir, The Wizard Exx, for well over one hundred years… One hardly knows if he still exists” he finishes.

“He exists…” Tor’Hum simply states. “And what of the 1st Heir…” he inquires.

“His name is Adon….” Lord Braug offers. “And he’s not likely to interfere… He has come to loath the human kind, even more than you I dare say…” Lord Braug finishes.

“You must be sure… If the Two Heirs of Warnlock were to come together–” Tor’Hum speaks, but is interrupted.

“This shall not be so” Onddos assures Tor’Hum.

“Just in case… Bring Adon to me” Tor’Hum says as he begins to prepare to sleep.

“Uhh, this may be a difficult task My Lord–” Onddos tries to explain, but Tor’Hum speaks over him.

“Do it Onddos…” Tor’Hum insists.

Onddos bows slightly “As you command My Lord…” Onddos replies, and then turns and leaves with Baron Braug.

MAELEM

Lord Braug’s Sons, Viden and Wiley, sit upon their great white horses, awaiting a report from their Head Sargent Milcoy.

Some One Hundred Knights accompany them.

Milcoy finally appears from within the remains of King Maelem’s Castle with six other knights accompanying him.

He kneels before them.

“It’s not here my Lord” he says as he breaks into a sweat.

“What do you mean… Not here” Viden responds ferociously.

“Just that My Lord… The Survivors must have taken it with them…”.

Just then another knight approaches “My Lords, we’ve found tracks of some fifty horses, as well as some twenty wagons, heading west” the knight informs them.

“Father will not be pleased about this “Wiley speaks to Viden.

“It looks as though the survivors of Maelem have headed west, and taken the King’s Treasury with them…” Viden replies.

“Indeed” agrees Wiley.

“Sargent Milcoy, take these 6 knights, and deliver a message to our Father Lord Braug…” Viden orders.

“Tell him that we’re thoroughly inspecting the remains of Maelem’s Castle, though Tor’Hum doesn’t appear to have left much….

“Aye My Lord” Sargent Milcoy heads to his horse, along with the other 6 knights.

“Meanwhile, we shall take our army west and track down the survivors…” Viden says to Wiley. “After all, where exactly do they plan on going… We’ve already paid off the surrounding Lords…”.

“We shall hunt them down, and collect Maelem’s Treasures!!” Wiley says enthusiastically as he kicks his horse onto its back two legs in demonstration of his over confidence.

NAYYY!!! it whinnies.

“This is not something that we need a “Dragon” in order to achieve…” Viden replies.

“LET US BE OFF!! Viden yells, and Lord Braug’s army departs.

THE PROVINCE OF PRASKE

TANNANHALL KEEP

Jade paces back and forth in her bedroom, when Natum, Captain of Tannanhall’s Guard, comes to her door.

KNOCK! KNOCK!.

“Enter!” Jade replies.

In comes Natum “My Lady” he bows.

“Come in Natum…” she replies, and steps towards the bedroom window, then faces Natum, whose now entered.

“With King Maelem dead, Tyrion is in great danger… After all, he was the one that lead King Maelem’s Armies during the last 15 years, and now he’s out there with but four men to protect him…” she explains, trying not to sound like she’s panicking.

“Do you understand Natum?” she questions him with obvious intent.

“I do indeed My Lady… Would you prefer Myself, or Ingum, to lead some of our Cavalry to aid, and/or protect him?” Natum inquires.

“I would lead them myself, but seeing as Tyrion appointed me to build his Home Guard, I must not let him down” she replies.

“Ingum has just arrived, so–” Jade is interrupted before she can finish, as Ingum suddenly appears in the doorway.

“I shall go My Lady… Tis my sworn duty to protect the Ruler of these Lands… As my Ancestors have done before me… And now that King Maelem is dead, that leaves Tyrion as our Natural Born Leader… Whether he claims that position, is yet to be seen… But until we have another, I swear my life, and my sword, to him”.

This appears to put Jade at a bit of ease.

“Thank you Ingum…”.

He bows a bit “I shall take the remaining Maelem Guard and retrieve, and/or aid and protect our now New Found Leader…” he bows, and leaves.

Jade than turns to Natum “Come Natum… We have much work ahead of us, and many more counting on our protection…” the two of them leave the room.

LUNIC MOUNTAINS

REALM OF MAGIC

Tyrion, Ahnug, Kon and his two Maelem Archers follow the three Sorcerer’s on horseback further up The Realm of Magic Pass.

Rarely has a common Mortal stepped upon these sacred peaks.

“So these three Sorcerers are Wizards of Paren?” Kon questions Tyrion.

“They’d better be…” Ahnug interjects.

“I’m afraid I know as much as you do Kon… I only hope they can take us to the Heirs of Warnlock, or I fear the worst… For we have no means of battling a Dragon…”.

At last they reach what looks to be some sort of Temple made of Solid Black Stone.

The Three Sorcerers dismount, and stand off to the right of what appears to be a stairway entrance, leading downward.

With this, the three sorcerers pull down their hoods revealing the black haired leader, another male, this one white haired, and a third female, whose hair almost appears to be a burgundy red.

Their eyes are no longer glowing white, which seems to put Kon at ease a bit.

“Lets do this” Ahnug starts to step forward, but Tyrion places his arm across his chest, stopping him.

“No… I go alone” Tyrion then steps forward, and makes his way down the stairs.

The stairs seem to go down about three floors before he reaches what appears to be some sort of room of prayer.

Floating in the air, sitting Indian style, eyes closed, is an older looking, white haired Mage… Adon.

Without opening his eyes, Adon speaks “You bare the Crystal of Orph…”.

With this Tyrion reaches in his shirt, and pulls out the blue crystal “Orph?”.

Adon opens his eyes, which appear to be an unearthly blue green… He then comes out of his levitative state, and stands.

“Indeed…” Adon replies, as he pours himself some sort of dark liquid, and brings Tyrion a cup of water.

“Drink…” he says as he hands the cup to Tyrion.

Tyrion drinks “Thank you” and hands him back the cup.

Suddenly the cup refills with water by itself “You need more than that, you’ve had a long journey”.

Tyrion startled, complies, and drinks.

“You can not defeat Tor’Hum…” Adon says as he returns to his levitative state.

Tyrion is surprised to hear him say this “That is why we’ve come to you? Can you not help us?”.

“No… I can not” Adon bluntly replies.

Tyrion is speechless. “Well, I can not merely sit back and watch this Dragon destroy all that King Maelem and I have achieved… Never has there been a peace like this… And I–” Tyrion is interrupted before he can finish.

“You are arrogant! Boy…”. “Never been a peace like thisI’ve known times on this Realm of such serenity that you could never hope to know… No, you, and your kind, are not capable of such a thing as “True Peace” and “Harmony” Adon snaps at him..

“Your Race has a Restless Spirit… Unquenchable… Never satisfied… No… You have no idea of the extent of Loss this Realm has experienced at the hands of… Mortals”.

“Are you not an Heir of Warnlock?? Was it not your kind that slayed the many Heirs of Shadowmyth at Ardent’s Stowe…” Tyrion demanded.

“With this Adon opened his eyes… “We are done here… Show yourself out… Knight”.

TANANHALL KEEP

Just over four days after departing Maelem, Ingum and the rest of the Maelem Survivors arive at Tannanhall Keep.

Some two to three hundred in all.

Amongst them some two dozen Maelem Guard, and eight Maelem Royal Guard, Lead by Ingum.

Jade wearing a Dark Blue Crushed Velvet Dress, walks straight to Ingum, in utter confusion and disbelief at what appears to be a large group of Maelem Citizens and Guard.

“Ingum!?… What has happened here !?!” she desperately inquires.

“My Lady… I am honored that you know my name…” he bows to Jade.

“Of course? you are our King’s Protector and Captain of the Maelem Royal Guard…” she quickly replied.

“Was My Lady… The King has been slain… This is all that remains of Maelem…”.

LUNIC MOUNTAINS

Tyrion, Ahnug, Kon and his two men are surrounded by a cold, wicked black ice storm, making visibility very difficult.

“WE’D BEST TAKE COVER MY LORD!!” Ahnug calls to Tyrion.

“THIS STORM MIGHT LAST FOR SEVERAL DAYS!! WE BEST PRESS ON!!” Tyrion replies, to Ahnug’s dismay.

Some six hours later, they finally see an unearthly light up ahead. Mist Green in color.

“THERE!!” Kon calls out, and points ahead. Tyrion nods.

“DRAW YOUR WEAPONS!!” Tyrion yells.

“SHHIINNGG!!” Tyrion draws his sabre, Ahnug his great two handed mace, and Kon and his Archers draw there bows.

As they get close, the dark ice storm all around them, they can hardly believe what they see.

It appears to be a Well, in the middle of a twenty foot in diameter patch of grass… All under some sort of Mist Green Light, like a dome, untouched by the storm.

“IT’S A TRAP!!” hollers Kon.

“WE HAVE NO CHOICE!!” Ahnug responds with demanding vigor.

“TAKE MY ARCHERS!! I’LL STAY BACK WITH TYRION!!” Kon counters.

Ahnug nods, and looks at Tyrion who nods his approval.

Kon then taps his Archers shoulders, and points to follow Ahnug.

And so they do.

As Ahnug and the archers enter the perimeter, they are staggered by this mist green dome of light, that sits unscathed from the storm. In fact, it’s almost serine.

“Magic…” one of the archers says under his breath, no longer needing to yell, as the green dome of light also seems to block out much of the sound from the surrounding storm.

“Yeah, well, check that Well… We need water” Ahnug orders.

One of the archers steps forward, his bow drawn, leans over the Well, and looks down into it.

He then looks back at Ahnug “Looks like there’s water down there–” suddenly he’s cut off as a harrowing voice comes from the other side of the dome, from out in the storm.

“HOW DARE YOU ENTER THIS SACRED SHELTER OF LIGHT!! YOU ARE NOT WELCOMED HERE…” it warns.

Ahnug jestures for the archer to come back.

“WE MEAN NO DISRESPECT!!” WE ONLY WISH TO PASS!!” Ahnug yells back.

There is a silence, and then three lean, white hooded and robed figures step into the light.

“What the hell?” Ahnug speaks under his breath.

The hoods cover the faces of the figures, and each of their hands are palm to palm, almost as if they are praying.

Suddnely the middle one pulls down his hood, revealing a long, black haired humanoid, whose eyes are filled with a glowing white light.

“Why have you mortals entered the sacred Lunic Mountains, Realm of Magic…” the Being spoke in almost an unearthly whisper.

“If you can tell me your names, then maybe I can tell you… We’re looking for–” but before he can finish, the dark haired one speaks…

“So be it…” suddenly the two other figures lift there outside arms and mumble some words, and Ahnug and the two archers are suddenly captured in spheres of Dark Emerald Light, and lifted ten feet off the ground, unable to escape.

“WHAT THE!! RELEASE US!!” Ahnug demands to no avail.

Tyrion and Kon see it as it happens “THAT’S IT!!” Kon yells as he runs towards the dome, unleashing arrow, after arrow, after arrow at the emerald spheres, in hopes of bursting them…

But he is not successful, as the arrows deflect off and out of the dome.

Just as Kon comes into the light, and the black haired figure raises his arm to capture him, Tyrion jumps in front of Kon and throws up his arms “No!! Wait!!”.

With this a Blue Light flares from Tyrions chest, and the dark haired caster is blown back into the darkness of the storm “ARGHHH!!”.

Suddenly, the others are realeased from their spheres, and fall to the ground “UMMPH!!”.

“What the?” Kon speaks. “What was that!?”.

Tyrion reaches underneath his shirt, pulls out and reveals the blue crystal necklace he’d been given from King Maelem.

“This?” Tyrion replies in disbelief.

CHAPTER X (Part One) – The Realm of Magic

Tyrion, Ahnug, Kon and Kon’s two Maelem Archers, had traveled now for two and one half days, making their way to the Lunic Mountains… And the supposed home to the Heirs of Wornlock…

Renowned as a Historical Region of Magic, thh common man rarely traveled there.

In fact, it had been so many years since anyone had spoken about such things as Dragons, and Magic, that magic had joined the bedside of “Myth”, where Dragons Lore also had resided.  Until now…

Several hundreds of years had passed without neither hide nor hair of Dragons, Wizards or Sorcerers, and thus, purely mortals have reigned, and battled for the Lands of the Realms.

A time of both War, and Peace, within a single race.

As Kon harassed his two archers, his way of keeping them sharp, Tyrion road up alongside Ahnug.

“Ahnug…” Tyrion spoke.

“Aye my lord…” he replied.

“I want you to be watchful of my actions this next moon cycle, as I am in mourning, and suspect my being distraught may, or may not, hinder my better judgements…”

“Aye Tyrion… Consider yourself under my eye…” with this Ahnug smiled at Tyrion, who in turn smiled back.

“To be honest with you, I’m more concerned with that…” with this Ahnug pointed to the mountains ahead which now had an unsettling, black, swirling assemblage of clouds enveloping them.

“Tyrion winched at the site, as Kon then approached.

“What do you suppose that’s about…” Kon inquired about the clouds that Ahnug had pointed at.

Tyrion, uncomfortable with making “guesses” as it were, abut subjects he knew nothing about, instead changed the conversation.

“How are your men, Kon?”

Kon noting this, did not press the issue.

“Frightened…” he replied.

“As they should be…” interjected Ahnug. “What with Dragons flying around, eh” with this he half smiled at Tyrion.

“Well, as my wits are slowly returning, the idea of only five of us heading out into this “New World of Darkness” that seems to be rearing it’s ugly head of late…” Tyrion looks over at Kon “…seems not the best of ideas”.

“Mmm” Kon replys. ” I think it’s better that you sent Ingum and the rest on to Tananhall…” Kon continued.

“Do you now?” Tyrion more cheerfully replies. “And why, may I ask, is that…”.

“The way I see it my lord, Tananhall is the less “Fool Hearty” of the two chosen paths…”.

“Ah Ha!!” with this the three of them laugh, and continue towards the Lunic Mountains, and it’s now Darkened Skies.

TANANHALL KEEP

Meanwhile back in Tananhall Keep, Jade has her hands full training the New Tananhall Guard Archer’s, primarily because she is a Woman, and they simply don’t respect her. Kon’s remaining two Maelem Archer’s also try to help.

“NOW WHEN I SAY RELEASE… RELEASE!” she announces to the dozen or so Men that are training, as she sits upon her White Horse Myriad. She is garbed out in Archer’s Attire.

“RELEASE!!” “SWOOOMMMM!!” they all release their shots at the nearby targets.

“VERY GOOD!”.

Kon’s Two Men seem impressed. “Very good my lady…” one of them speaks. With this she dismounts.

“Yeah, well… I have one more surprise for them…” with this she waves over some dozen or so woman that have lined up near the gate. Timidly, they approach.

This baffles Kon’s Men, as well as the rest of the men that are training.

“Ready my lady…” Brentia speaks, a particularly tall blond girl of 26.

“Good…” Jade replies and then turns to Kon’s Men “Train these woman…”.

“Uhh… My lady–” one of them started to say, but Jade interrupts “Do it!” and walks away.

Brentia smiles at the men, and then waves the other woman to step forward.

Meanwhile Jade goes inside the Keep where Lizander the House Man approaches her “My lady, would you prefer your lunch in your room again?”. She stops.

“No… In fact, bring lunch to all of the Archers, including the woman… I will join them momentarily” and she continues to her room.

Once in her room she steps up to her mirror, takes off her long leather gloves, and looks at her reflection.

“Tyrion, please be okay…”.

MAELEM

Ingum has gathered all of the survivors from underneath Maelem, as well as the remaining Maelem Guard, and Royal Guard. He is mounted, and is ready to depart. Tyrion, Kon and Ahnug stand in front of Ingum’s Horse.

“May the God’s be with you My Lord” Ingum speaks, and then salutes in Maelem fashion.

“And you Ingum… Protect these people, and get them there safely…” replied Tyrion.

“Aye… That I will” Ingum replies, turns his horse away “ONWARD TO TANANHALL!!” he yelled, and they were off.

“And now for us…” spoke Tyrion as he looked at Ahnug and Kon. “To our horses, we have quite a ride ahead of us…”.

CHAPTER VIII; The Heirs of Warnlock

It was two days before Tyrion was seen again… Locked away in the room in which his Father, or as close to a Father as he had ever had, King Maelem, had died.

Meanwhile, Ahnug and Kon spoke outside the hallway of the room.

“I do not think it’s a good idea to stay here…spoke Ahnug.

“I have to agree with you, it will only be so long before whoever is behind this sends soldiers to secure the province, or worse even–“

“The Dragon…” Ahnug finished Kon’s sentence.

Suddenly the door to the chamber opened, and Tyrion came out “Arrange a meeting with Ingum immediately, we needs locate the Heir’s of Warnlock…”

Quickly, Ahnug, Kon, Tyrion and Ingum were in the Meeting Hall. Tyrion paced back and forth as Ingum spoke.

“Apparently in the time of Shadowmyth, there was an Alliance with Man, and the Dragon’s…”. “But the Wizard’s of Paren never felt comfortable with the existence of Dragon’s, as the two Races of Dragon and Mage had fought a three thousand year war…” Tyrion stops and looks at Ingum.

“Or so King Maelem has told me…” Tyrion continues pacing.

“And so Tor’Hum knowing this, arranged a meeting with Conquoi, the most powerful, and Leader of the Wizard’s of Paren, and struck a deal…”

“A deal with a Dragon?? Outrageous” spoke Ahnug, who looked to Tyrion, as he looked back at him.

“Continue Ingum…” spoke Kon.

“And so when Shadowmyth and Wintoran were away–“

“Wintoran?” interjected Tyrion.

“Yes… Shadowmyth’s Mate, the Matriarch of the Dragon’s…”

“Tor’Hum’s Mother…” spoke Kon.

“Aye” replied Ingum. “So when Shadowmyth and Wintoran were away, Tor’Hum delivered the Wizard’s of Paren, and their Mercenary Armies, to Ardent’s Stowe–“

“The Lair of the Dragon’s” interjected Ahnug.

“Aye, and, the Sleeping Dragon’s, unsuspecting the attack, were caught off guard and destroyed…”.

“What treachery… He killed his own siblings” spoke Kon.

Ahnug looks over at Kon “He’s a Dragon… What yah expect…”.

With this Tyrion leaned up against the great table and spoke “Wintoran??”.

Ingum shrugged “The King made no mention of what became of Wintoran…”.

“Only that Shadowmyth carried Tor’Hum ripping, and clawing, to Ardent’s Stowe, where he buried him alive with only the Bones of his Brother’s and Sister’s to keep him company”.

“Justice…” Ahnug spoke as he stood.

“And who are these “Heirs of Warnlock”?” questioned Tyrion.

“Apparently they are the only two Great Wizard’s of Paren remaining” Ingum replied.

“So there may be more Mage’s than them?” inquired Kon.

“Aye… Just not as powerful as the Heir’s”.

“We needs leave this place now…” Tyrion suddenly proclaimed. With this Kon and Ingum also stood.

“Maelem is dead, and fallen… We need to get these people out of here…” Tyrion looked at Ingum “Ingum, can I count on you to lead the survivors of this masacre to the Province of Praske, and my Keep there…”.

“Aye sir, would be an honor… I shall prepare the remaining Knights, and Suvivors… We will leave at sunrise” Ingum smacks his fist against his chest as was custom in Maelem, and leaves the chamber.

“What about us?” inquired Ahnug.

“We needs seek out the Heirs of Warnlock… And any that remain from the Wizard’s of Paren”. “Come…”.
