Star Wars Movie Poster 2

In 1975 I wanted to be a Baseball Player (Pitcher), but my parents divorced, and we lived in a remote canyon, so I was pretty sure my mom would never be able to get me to Little League practice.

So I let that dream go, though my mom says I only ever mentioned Baseball once to her a as a kid.

I was shy, and soft spoken, so I didn’t talk much, other than to my brother who was 15 months younger than me.

In 1977, my brother, mom and I saw the Original Star Wars in the theatre…

From that day forward, I wanted to be a Filmmaker.

1980

Then came The Empire Strikes Back (1980), the best sequel ever, which firmly cemented the notion of Film Making in my mind/heart.

Twenty two years after the Original Star Wars, I stepped away from a successful Corporate America Job, moved near my bro in Oregon, bought a video camera, and started working on Experimental Film Projects.

It wasn’t until that time, that I realized I also wanted to Write my Films.

After 7 months of messen around/writing/filming, I moved back to Southern California, and was back working in a cubical, but for half the money I was making before.

In my spare time I wrote a Teleplay (Screenplay for television) of a Sci-Fi Mini Series that I hoped to submit to the Sci-Fi Channel.

Also, as a Film Making exercise, I created mini sets, and Filmed Action Figure versions of some of the initial Scenes.

In 2002 I moved back to Oregon to work on Short Films with my bro, to submit into Film Festivals.

To my dismay, he had no time to do this.

Then out of frustration I wrote a 5 minute Short Film, and Filmed it in an hour and a half…

…Edited it, and Submitted it to a Film Festival in New York.

It got in.

Forgive the rough quality, it was Shot in Hi-8, then converted to Digital…

…and, like I say, was Shot in only an hour and a half.

Also that year, I Wrote a First Draft of a Feature Length Screenplay, with hopes of selling it someday, and using the money to Produce my own projects.

It was called ‘White Jade’

In September of 2002, I flew with my Dad to New York, and saw my Short Film on the Big Screen (It was actually like a half sized screen, lol).

It was at that moment I thought to myself, “I’m a Filmmaker”.

Sadly 3 months later, I ended up in the hospital with a health issue, and decided to step away from Film.

That didn’t last long, in the following year I moved to Arizona to stay with my Step Bro this time, and started to Write & gather some people who would work on what would be my Second Film (This one would be an hour long).

Sadly, I went through some trauma related to my health issues, and needed to move back to Southern California to live with my Mom and her boyfriend.

There I suffered extreme anxiety from the trauma, so didn’t go out much.

But I did pick up my White Jade Screenplay, and poured hundreds of hours into it.

Then in 2004 I Wrote Query Letters for it, and Submitted to Writing Agents, in hopes that they might read it, and Represent me.

Sadly, no response.

That year I also started some other Screenplays, but White Jade is the only one I Edited hundreds of hours, to create a finished product.

In 2005 I took a break from Dream Chasing, and wasn’t really leaving the house.

In 2006 I started a job outside the house, and would be there for 6 months.

During that time I hired a Comic Book Artist (Student) to Draw some Scenes from White Jade, so that should the opportunity arise, I’d have some visuals to show potential Producers.

I was so impressed by the Art, that I decided to try and make White Jade into a Comic Book, and hired the same Artist to Draw me the First 8 Pages of the Comic Book.

Including Covers for Issue 1, & 2.

I then Submitted the Comic Book Pages and Cover #1 to Dark Horse Comics, and a few other Independent Comic Book Companies (I didn’t try for Marvel, or DC, figured they were more Main Stream), to no avail.

I then had a severe anxiety attack while I was out, and had to leave the job.

From 2006-2011 I played a whole lot of World of Warcraft, lol

Which was great, and gave me a break from pursuing my dreams, as well as an opportunity to heal a bit emotionally from the trauma.

Wasn’t really leaving the house during 2007-2010.

In 2010, I moved out for a year and a half, and started going out again.

In 2011 I moved back home to my Moms’, and decided to Create a Writing Blog… This was the Blog.

When I started this Blog my hope was to get in the habit of Writing everyday, by shooting for an average of 600 Words per day, which wasn’t all that much.

It worked, I actually averaged somewhere around 1,200+ Words per day for a year and a half, and created a boat load of Poems, Blog Stories, a Couple Novellas & a Fantasy Novel.

i-died-once-cover

In 2012, I Self Published some Poems, a ‘Partial Comic Book’ (The White Jade Pages), and my First Novella, “I Died Once”.

mady-cover2

In late 2012 I wrote the Second Novella in the Series “Mady’s Storm”, but didn’t end up getting it Edited, and Self Published until 2015.

cwa

Also in 2012 I Wrote/Finished my First Fantasy Novel, “Chess With Agatha”, and hired an Editor.

After it was Edited, I still didn’t feel it was ready to Self Publish, so I sat it aside.

In 2013 slowed down on my Writing.

In 2015 I was missing Film Making, and still not leaving the house, ended up for the fun of it Filming a ‘Mock’ Trailer for White Jade.

I was so inspired by it, that I decided to break the Screenplay up into 16 Episodes, and Produce a 16 Part Web Series.

I also started to leave the house at this time.

The Pre-Production would last 8 to 10 Months…

(Sword Training Above).

During that time I poured hundreds and hundred of hours into Pre-Production

(Rehearsal Above)

(First Filmed Scene, which would have had Visual Effects added to enhance)

And even Filmed a couple Scenes from Episode 7 & 10 (Early), which was when the Actor was available.

(Second Filmed Scene, which also would have been enhanced by Visual Effects)

Everything was going really well, but sadly, I went through some personal things, coupled with a bad anxiety attack, and stopped going out again.

I kept working on Pre-Production, but after several months of not going out, I decided to bring the Production to a halt.

Wanting to put myself at ease, I returned to an old Hobby of mine from the 80’s 90’s, Dungeons & Dragons.

Something I’ve always been passionate about, and also an excellent tool for sharpening your Writing/Character/Character Development/Storytelling Skills.

But I did it for sheer pleasure.

But being who I am, I spent the next 6 months creating Conent, and even thought about Self Publishing some of it.

frm

But I decided against it.

I now sit in a place, where I play a lot of Dungeons & Dragons, do some Writing on here, and miss Film Making.

Something that I ran into when I was doing Rehearsals for White Jade was, I came to the realization that I may have a ‘Fear of Success’ (Some have fear of failure, some have fear of success).

What I mean by that is, after I finished a really good White Jade Rehearsal, it hit me that if we do actually Produce the Episodes, and it has any kind of success/following etc., that it would all rest on me to keep it going…

…that all involved would rely on me to keep it going.

And all the fun etc. that they had with it, would be on me.

It shook me.

I never realized I had any kind of fear in regards to this.

Part of it may have to do with I hate pressure… The other part may have to do with I’d been through so much anxiety stuff, I feared the responsibility of it would stress me out.

Then there’s the other part which is, basically, I have no idea why I was worried, and/or why I worry.

I’m very happy with all of my creations, and yes I’d love to make a living, and just create create create, doing what I love…

…connecting and inspiring people, which has always been my main hope.

But at this point, I’m just not sure I’m up to it…

…up to success.

Up to the emotional trials.

Time will tell I guess.

Believe it or nor, I am a Writer, though much of what you’ve seen posted lately on my

“The Written Word” Blog has been about my upcoming Web Series, “White Jade”

In 2011 I created this Blog as a ‘Creative Writing Stream Of Consciousness’, so to speak

And in 2012 I Self Published my First Book, which was a Short Book of Poetry, followed by my First Novella, which was “I Died Once”

“Winter, Lust And Wonder” (Poetry Book) @ Amazon

“I Died Once” @ Amazon

“I Died Once” was a story that just came to me chapter after chapter in the winter of 2011, and to my surprise, had some positive reviews.

When I say to my surprise, what I mean is, I thought there would be some that liked it, some that didn’t… But for the most part, even people who weren’t really into this genre of story seemed to get something out of it.

As a writer, I was enthralled.

Later that year I gave away thousands of Free Digital Copies of it, just to get people familiar with my writing a bit.

On Amazon I got 4 Good Reviews, and 1 not good one, which to me, was better than I expected Amazon Reviews

One thing I knew right away about ‘Mady’, was there was more to tell than just the first Novella, in which she was just 15 years old.

And so come the winter of 2012, I was at it again, and wrote the first draft of the follow up Novella, “Mady’s Storm”.

“Mady’s Storm” takes place 8 years later, and I won’t say any more than that, as I don’t want to give anything away about the original Novella, nor the followup one.

A Font with Serifs

Also during that time, as well as the spring of 2013, I wrote my first Fantasy Novel, “Chess With Agatha”.

Before touching “Mady’s Storm” again, I hired an Editor for “Chess With Agatha”, but found myself still wanting more than what was the finished product.

That’s when I brought on a second Writer & Editor, and she began helping me realize “Chess With Agatha’s” true potential…

But it became quickly apparent, that it was going to take a very long time for us to finish this revised version of “Chess With Agatha”, and so we sat it down.

Mady Cover2

In 2015 I finally found a moment to pick “Mady’s Storm” back up, and had my “Chess With Agatha” Co-Writer/Editor do a quick Edit of it.

In December 2015 I finally Self Published “Mady’s Storm”, after a long ‘Mady’ hiatus.

allure

In addition to the ‘Mady Chronicles’ (The First Two Novellas, plus future novellas), the “Chess With Agatha” Trilogy (Part of the second book is written as well), I also wrote two Vampire Novellas from what is called the ‘Allure’ Series.

The truth is, I have a lot of work to do as a Writer should I hope to make these series of books a reality… And though I’m currently working on my “White Jade” Web Series (Which I wrote as well), there is a part of me that longs to get back to my Books.

From Screenplay, To Scene Drawings, To Comic Book Pages, To Web Series – “White Jade”… 13 Years In The Making

Posted in Legends Productions, Video, Web Series, White Jade with tags , on November 12, 2015 by darkjade68

wjFrom Screenplay, To Scene Drawings, To Comic Book Pages, To Web Series – “White Jade”… 13 Years In The Making

In 2002, I moved to Eugene, Oregon for the second time

The first time had been to begin pursuing Film Making via Experimental Film Making with my Brother

But the second time was to work on Short Films with my Brother

To my frustration, my brother was unable to work on projects, due to his personal life which was falling apart… Something he had failed to mention whilst wooing me to return to Oregon to work on Film/Video Projects (I don’t mean to sound heartless, I had just moved my whole life there to do it, couldn’t get work there, etc. In the end, I think he really needed me there, so I’m glad it happened)

Out of frustration, I wrote a Short Film about two brothers…

Convinced him to give me an hour or so of his time…

And this was the Outcome

“If Not Now…”

“If Not Now…” was shot in about an hour and a half

My brother had never seen the Screenplay

I then submitted it to a New York Film And Video Festival, and got in

What does this have to do with “White Jade”?

During my 7 months time there, I stumbled into a Chinese Restaurant one night by myself, and a Film Story Concept came to me

But this story wouldn’t take place in China… It would take place in Future Japan

This story, was “White Jade”

White Jade Cover Book 1I went home after dinner, sat down, and wrote an 80 page First Draft…

…and sat it aside

My thinking was maybe I’d sell it someday, and use the money to fund my own Film Projects

That September, I went to New York with my Dad, and watched my Short Film “If Not Now…” on the big screen… It changed my life… I was a Filmmaker

Sadly 3 months later, I would end up in the hospital for 10 days

It was a combination of a 1 month long flu, and not being on my medicine for a year (I have an irregular heartbeat, but during 2002, I couldn’t afford my medicine)

The result, I weakened my heart… But this isn’t a sob story… And don’t worry, my heart was strong again within a few months

The problem was, they installed a device to protect my heart while it was weak, and this device ended up traumatizing me

Long story short, it zaps you if your heartbeat gets too fast, but it malfunctioned and read my irregular heart beat as a higher beats per minute… (This medical stuff will be over in a minute, I promise)

As it turned out, the device just needed to be adjusted, but by the time I found out, I had already received several shocks in a short time period, and have dealt with anxiety issues since

I’m not trying to make you sad here, it was just a bad series of events/accidents

Anyway, after the trauma, which was in July, 2003, I stepped away from Film Making, and turned to Screenplay Writing

The first thing I did was pick up my 80 Page First Draft of “White Jade”, and poured a couple hundred hours into Editing it into 2004

The finished product was 124 Pages (In film, one page equals a minute of Film)

I then wrote, and sent out a Query Letter (A short letter designed to tantalize an agent with your Story Concept) to several Agents, to no avail

I sat it down again

But in 2005 I picked it up again, and hired an Artist to draw me some Scenes from the Script…

Scene 4 of 4 Ti LiThese scenes were meant to be used as what I called ‘Eye Candy’

I would use them as Visual Aids to show the Story Concept to Investors who might consider purchasing the Screenplay

For some investors, reading the Screenplay isn’t enough for them to understand the Writers Vision

She drew me 4 Scenes… The one above, and

Scene 1 of 4 NayokoScene 2 of 4 Ben and Ti LiScene 3 of 4 NayokoI was so impressed with the drawings, that I decided to convert the Screenplay into a Comic Book, and hired her to Draw me a Cover, and the First 8 Pages

Page 8I loved them…

I then shopped the Comic Book Pages to two or three Comic Book Publishers, including “Dark Horse Comics”

Once again, to no avail

And so once again I sat the project down

Until 2012…

I had begun a Creative Writing Blog in 2011 (This Blog), and in 2012 Self Published a Poetry Book, a Novella, and an 8 Page Partial Comic Book, using the Pages that she drew in 2006

In 2013 I kinda took a break from Writing, as I had achieved my goal of averaging 1,000+ Words Per Day for a year and a half

But in 2015 I hit a point where I wanted to get back to Film Making, and so I created a Film/Video Production Company Called “Legends Productions”, which I intended to use to make Web Series, and Video Projects on YouTube

This is when I finally came to the realization that the only way I’m going to ever see “White Jade” realized, was to do it myself on YouTube

And thus, I’ve divided the 124 Page Screenplay into 16 eight minute long Episodes, and will begin shooting very shortly

The reality is I’ve wanted to be a Filmmaker since I saw the Original two “Star Wars” Films in 1977, and 1980, pursued it in 2000-2003, and basically sat down Film Making for the past 12 years

But with YouTube, and “Legends Productions”, I hope to return to it, and I hope all of you will join me on the Journey/Quest

“White Jade” is just the beginning…
