CHAPTER XXX – He Did It For The Girl

“What is the meaning of this?” spoke Faren, wiping the slumber from his eyes.

“I could have killed you!” he continued.

Zahn turns from him, the rest of the Party now awake.

“Six Drudgek Barbarian Archers are following us…” Zahn speaks.

Tor-Atimus looks enraged, “WHAT!”

Zahn faces Faren once more, “Did you know about this?”

“Or course he did!” proclaims Stigus.

Meanwhile Chi and Kinner are peering southward, trying to see anything beyond the hills.

“I didn’t,” simply replies Faren, whose lowered his great axe.

“They’re 400 yards back,” speaks Zahn.

“What do we do?” questions Kinner.

“Find out what they want Faren,” speaks Zahn.

“How can we trust Faren, he’s one of them,” speaks Stigus.

“I don’t think so,” interjects Chi which surprises everyone, as he was Faren’s greatest doubter.

“Not anymore,” Chi concludes.

Faren gazes at Chi for a moment.

“I’ll find out,” speaks Faren, who then mounts his horse, and rides southward.

“This isn’t good Zahn… We could be in for a battle,” spoke Tor-Atimus.

“Perhaps,” replied Zahn.

Faren returned 15 minutes later.

“They, like me, are under direct orders from Prince Noria… Disclosure of their intentions would mean death… But I told them they have failed, as we are aware of their presence,” spoke Faren.

Zahn paces a bit perplexed.

“I’m through with Noria… Even if it means death… The reason he sent me was for the girl,” spoke Faren.

Stigus looks stunned, “What?”

“He was intrigued by her… Impressed by her show of strength in his great hall,” explained Faren.

“His treatment of woman knows no bounds, though I am Dragonborn, he’d have me a slave as well…” speaks Stigus.

The two girls Stigus got the Prince to release look at one another.

“The danger of being part of this Party has risen… We can’t have these Barbarians following us…” proclaims Zahn.

“I will speak to the Prince,” suddenly the familiar voice of Dreyha, the Wood Elf Druid, steps into camp.

“And who may I ask are you?” questions Tor-Atimus, who looks at Zahn, then realizes this is where Zahn was last night.

“She warned you about the Barbarian Archers, didn’t she…” spoke Ren enthusiastically as he begins to figure it out.

Zahn nods.

“I’ll do what I can,” and with this Dreyha transforms into a Great Eagle, and flies southward.

“The downside to ‘uncharted’ regions I suppose, is there’s no town to surround ourselves with… Until this matter is resolved, we will stay here,” spoke Zahn who wanders off as if to figure out his next move.

“You heard the man,” spoke Tor-Atimus… “Ready yourselves for anything.”

CHAPTER XXIX – Dreyha

During the Second Watch, as Chi and Ren discuss magic, religion and life, Zahn’s eyes suddenly open from a dead sleep…

…he stands to Chi and Ren’s surprise.

“What is it boss?” questions Ren with a slight smile.

“Don’t follow me,” Zahn replies, then disappears into the night.

Chi and Ren look baffled…

…”I’d better wake Tor-Atimus,” concludes Ren.

Meanwhile Zahn walks into the night for some 100 feet or so until he comes across a large tree.

Being Human, he doesn’t have the ability to see in the dark (Darkvision) more than the partial moon and stars allow…

…which isn’t much.

“Whose there,” he speaks in the direction of the tree.

Suddenly an exceptionally large black panther leaps down from one of its’ great branches.

Glowing yellow eyes it circles him slowly.

Zahn closes his eyes, and sits on the ground Indian style.

“A man of faith,” comes a soothing female voice from in front of him.

With this Zahn opens his eyes, and before him, also sitting Indian style, is a black haired, yellow eyed Wood Elf girl…

…her attire is colored in greens and browns.

“Who are you?” Zahn spoke.

“I am Dreyha… Of the Green Tower…” she spoke.

“Jarothh sent you?” questioned Zahn.

“Yes…” she replied.

“I want to show you something,” she spoke, then turned back into a black panther…

…her yellow eyes gazed back at Zahn, beckoning him to get onto her back…

…and so he did.

She ran back the way his Party had come some 400 yards south of his camp, until they came upon 6 Barbarian Archers at a campfire of their own.

Zahn got off her back and she became a Wood Elf again.

Zahn kneeled behind a bush, “Those are Barbarians from Drudgek.”

She nodded.

She then transformeed back into the panther and took him back to the tree.

“I will be around…” she spoke, then disappeared into the night.

Zahn returned to his camp where Tor-Atimus, Chi and Ren waited for him.

Zahn walked right by them, and stood before Faren’s sleeping form.

Faren woke immediately and rose in a flash, great axe drawn.

“We need to talk,” spoke Zahn.

CHAPTER XX – Faren

When the Party reached the outside of the Barbarian Keep, Zahn brought them to a halt…

“Tor-Atimus,” Zahn spoke, as he gestured towards a large sack on Tor-Atimus’s horse.

Tor-Atimus grabbed the sack, and Zahn reached inside and pulled out 20 gold, “Here you are,” he handed it to Ren…

He went on to hand each of them, other than Tor-Atimus, 20 gold each.

“As promised…” spoke Zahn.

Each of them looked pleased.

Suddenly the blond Barbarian that had lead them to the Keep appeared.

“Noria wishes me to travel with you,” he spoke.

Zahn looked at Tor-Atimus who had no reaction.

OUT OF GAME

“I’d like to roll INSIGHT for Zahn,” spoke Mike.

“Alright,” replies Johnny.

“I rolled a 14,” Mike spoke.

“Alright, add your Proficiency Bonus of +2, because you’re proficient in Insight, and add your Wisdom Modifier,” explained Johnny.

“Alright, that’s 20 then,” spoke Mike.

“Nice,” I (Connor) spoke.

“Woot,” exclaimed Barry.

“There’s something he’s not telling you,” spoke Johhny.

Zahn put his hands on both of the Barbarians shoulders, “Why does Noria want you with us.”

Zahn’s eyes looked intensely into the Barbarian’s eyes, causing him to sweat.

“I… Can not say,” he replies.

All seem amused, save Chi, who looks at the Barbarian suspiciously.

“I can say, he does not mean any of you any harm… More than that, and he will have my head,” explains the Barbarian.

“What is your name?” questioned Zahn who now released his shoulders.

“FAREN… I am Faren,” he replied.

Zahn looks at Tor-Atimus, “See what you can get from the Barbarian Prince (Noria)… Meanwhile, we’ll prepare the horses.”

Tor-Atimus nods, then heads back into the Keep.

Once inside Tor-Atimus approaches the Barbarian Prince, Noria…

“Why do you want your man with our Party?” he questions.

A black panther is at the Prince’s side, where it was not before.

He strokes its’ head, “I’m curious about your Cleric Zahn… And his God, Apollo… It’s purely for diplomatic purposes,” he finishes with a gleam in his dark blue eyes.

He’s lying, thinks Tor-Atimus to himself.

“And if we decline,” replies Tor-Atimus.

The Prince smiles, “Well, I will have him follow you either way… And… I will be insulted.”

Tor-Atimus pauses, then nods, “Very well… I shall tell Zahn, and you will have our answer.”

Tor-Atimus nods, and leaves the Hall.

“Such insolence,” speaks the Prince under his breath.

He then waves over one of his Elite Guards, “Send 6 or our Archers to follow from a distance… Tell them to do nothing unless I tell them to… Send them with a Messenger Hawk.”

The Elite Guard nods, then departs.

Tor-Atimus tells Zahn what the Prince said, and how he was hiding something, and he decides to take Faren with them…

Meanwhile Stigus has gotten a horse for the Bandit who joined their Party, and two more for the Slave girls who also wish to travel with them.

Noting this, Zahn nods at Stigus.

“We’re heading to the ‘uncharted’ Region of THAEN,” speaks Zahn, and the Party departs…

…following shortly after, 6 Barbarian Archers.

CHAPTER XIX – Drudgek Barbarians

As Chi and Ren return to the camp, the singing and dancing was slowly coming to a climax…

When the music stopped, the dark haired Gypsy girl approached Kinner, “It’s time for you to meet WINDOR.”

With this she took his arm, and moved him towards the wagon…

…from the back of wagon stepped the robed Kenku, Windor.

The Gypsies cheered lightly, then quieted.

Chi looked over at Ren who was watching intently.

“Mordela says you have a gift…” speaks Windor, his voice sounding part bird.

“A gift?” replies Kinner.

“You are… Very ‘influential’…” speaks Windor.

“Well… As a Bard… Especially being a Drow… I find it helpful,” replies Kinner.

“Yes… I imagine you do,” spoke Windor, who then found Ren’s eyes.

Ren’s Tiefling eyes, which are black, seem somehow to go blacker.

“You keep… Pleasant company,” speaks Windor.

Kinner looks at his comrades,”Yes… I do.”

“However… I invite you to travel with us for a while… Your fiddle would be a welcome accompaniment… As would your ‘conversation’…” finishes Windor.

With this Zahn looked at Kinner, who did not look back at him.

“No… I can’t… But I thank you,” replied Kinner.

Zahn looked at Tor-Atimus, who seems as pleased as he.

“Very well… Then we wish you well in your journey,” spoke Windor, who then looked over at Chi, “May you find what you seek.”

This sent a chill down Chi’s back.

Windor then returned to the wagon, and the Gypsies quickly gathered their camp, and were gone…

…into the night, which they preferred.

The next day, Day 6 of Zahns Party’s journey, a group of 6 riders approached…

“Barbarians,” spoke Stigus.

Zahn raised his arm, halting the Party, then looked over at Tor-Atimus.

“Perhaps you, me and Stigus should ride to meet them,” spoke Tor-Atimus.

Zahn nodded, and the two of them road past Stigus, gesturing her to accompany them.

Ate Leader apparent was a most robust specimen, with shoulder length sandy blond hair…

Zahn halted his horse some 15 feet from the Barbarians who didn’t seem all that concerned about the Party.

“What business have you in Drudgek,” spoke the Leader.

“I am Zahn, of the Order of Apollo…”

The Barbarians look at one another.

“We do not serve Apollo,” replied the Leader.

“I only request that I may speak to your Leader, Nosia,” spoke Zahn respectfully.

The Barbarian Leader paused, then nodded, “We shall take you to him.”

“It’s a days journey,” the Barbarian Leader concluded.

Zahn’s Party followed the 6 Barbarians towards Dudgek, and when night fell, he let them stand guard, as they seemed to prefer it.

The following morning they continued their journey until they reached a large village surrounding a large, black stone Keep.

It was well protected, and the Barbarian Guards looked the Party over with a dash of pessimism in their gazes.

The blond Barbarian who brought them here, left his men outside the Keep, and escorted the Party inside.

Finally they reached a great hall, “He’s in there,” spoke the blond Barbarian, he then turned, and walked away.

Inside the great pillared Hall, there were 8 what looked to be ‘Elite’ Barbarian Guards… One standing before each pillar.

At the end of the Hall, sat a strong looking, black haired Barbarian, on what looked almost to be a throne.

He drank from a silver chalice, and had two woman slaves on chains, each attached to one of his throne arms.

This did not sit well with Stigus.

Zahn and his Party came to a halt some 30 feet before the Barbarian Leader.

Zahn bowed slightly, “Greetings Noria.”

Noria, who was very handsome, eyes sparkled a dark, almost black, blue.

He recognized the yellow sun medallion around Zahn’s neck immediately.

“Cleric of Apollo… What brings you to Drudgek,” he spoke.

“Galdur, we feel, is in need of Apollo’s light, and guidance…” responded Zahn.

“I see…” replied Noria grimly.

“Well… Uthgar is our God, and we are not shopping for another, I bid you ado,” he spoke, then gestured for the Guards to escort them away.

Stigus did not move, “Who are you to treat your woman so.”

Zahn did not interfere, nor did Tor-Atimus, who seemed enthralled by her strength.

Noria smiled, “These two are slaves… Captured from an enemy… They are not our people,’ he explained, seemingly amused.

“I will fight for their release,” she spoke.

With this Noria smiled, then pulled a large axe off his back, and struck the chains of each of the slave girls.

“They are yours to do with as you please,” he spoke.

With this the girls both ran out of the Hall.

Tor-Atimus nodded at Noria, and the Party then left.

Noria never took his eyes off the Dragonborn Stigus.
