Chess With Agatha…

And The Dark Fortress of Doom

A Novel by DarkJade

CHAPTER IX – The Red and Blue Forest

As The Blue Wizard Hemmingbyrd, Jodan, Morr, Iliad, Agatha and Eight of The Dark Fortress of Doom’s Guard make their way through the Luminous Red and Blue Forest of Doth

Agatha’s Eyes are darting all about in absolute amazement.

Four Guards in front, four in back, Jodan behind the front guards, Morr all the way in back of the back guards… With Agatha, Hemmingbyrd and Iliad ridding in the middle.

“I have never seen anywhere like this Hemmingbyrd… Never… Not even remotely” Agatha explains in a barely audible whisper.

“Good” he simply replies.

“Do not fear My Lady… You are well protected” Iliad says trying to put her at ease, though he himself is shaking in his boots so to speak.

“Okay… Protected from what??” she replies, her eyes even wider and brighter blue than they were before, and still darting all about.

“We should make camp soon Wizard” Jodan looks back and speaks at Hemmingbyrd.

“Very well… Make it so” Hemmingbyrd dismissively replies.

“What? Here??” Agatha interjects, fear in her voice “We’re going to camp in this Forest??”.

“Oh dear” Iliad says quietly under his breath.

“You heard Jodan… Ambazo” Hemmingbyrd replies almost feistily, and then rides to the front to discuss it with Jodan”.

“Ambazo?” Agatha replies.

“Yeah tell me about it” Iliad replies, and then remembers that Agatha doesn’t understand Hemmingbyrd’s “Odd” words.

“Oh… Well… Basically it means–” he starts to explain, but Agatha interrupts.

“I get it… I get it… “Damn it Girl”” she replies as her eyes continue to dart about.

“Well… Yes… Basically” Iliad replies.

THIRTY MINUTES LATER

Jodan and the Guards have made a fire, and four of them are standing guard while the others get some rest… Planning to rotate shifts in the middle of the night.

Meanwhile, Jodan, Iliad, Hemmingbyrd and Agatha sit by the fire cooking meat on a stick.

Morr is by his mount, rustling around in one of his bags.

“Tell me about this place Hemmingbyrd…” Agatha requests with the utmost of interest in her voice.

Hemmingbyrd takes a stringy, chewy bite of the rodent that the guards had caught them for dinner “Blark!!” then spits it out, and tosses the stick in the fire.

“I’ll stick to Sourdust” he speaks.

He then looks at Agatha who is patiently waiting.

“Icy… Dead… Walkers” is all he says, and then rises and stretches.

“Alright then, I’m off, get some sleep you all” and walks off to his sleeping place.

Meanwhile Agatha’s eyes are as wide as they’ve been.

“Gotta love that Wizard… Get to sleep you two, you’ll need the rest, we’ve a long ride to Yokade Labrynth the next few days” he says, and then goes to talk to one of the guards.

“Yokade Labrynth??” Agatha is hardly able to utter, as Iliad gets under his “not warm enough” blanket.

“Yeah… Sure… If the Icy Dead Walkers don’t kill us first” he mumbles as he falls to sleep almost immediately.

This of course leaves no one to talk to… But Morr.

Just as Morr finishes up whatever he’s doing with his saddle bags, he turns to find Agatha standing there.

“Icy Dead Walkers??” she plainly states.

Chess With Agatha…

And The Dark Fortress of Doom

A Novel by DarkJade

CHAPTER EIGHT – West Bound

THE DARK FORTRESS OF DOOM

OUTSIDE THE FORTRESS GATES

Morr, Jodan, Hemmingbyrd and Eight Dark Fortress of Doom Guards all on Horseback, await Agatha.

At Hemmingbyrd’s side is a Dark Brown Horse, which he has attached to his.

Meanwhile Iliad dances and does cartwheels about as he Sings a Song of Doom…

Ohhhh, Off They Go… Into Plightful Gloom…

Far Away… From Fortress Doom

Will The Bull Head… End Their Lives…

Cut Their Tongues Out… With Sacred Knives…

With this Hemmingbryd looks down at Iliad “Enough Fool…”.

“We haven’t even left the Fortress yet, and you’re “Sending us on our ways”” exclaims Hemmingbyrd.

Iliad stops “Sorry My Lord… I shall miss the lot of you”.

With this Morr looks at Iliad.

“Okay, maybe not you Morr…” Iliad states.

Just then Agatha appears, wearing Dark Blue and Black Leather Gear, her long golden lockets tied into a single braid running down her back, and her blue eyes glowing brightly.

Hemmingbyrd loses his breath for a moment.

Jodan and Morr note her almost jovial spirit.

Strapped to her side is Agamemnon’s Cherry Wood Cane.

“Good Morning all!” she states loud enough for all to hear, including the Fortress Guards… Who are otherwise Visaged in Dread.

“Good Morning Me Lady” The Guards reply in sync.

“Good Morrow Agatha!” Jodan speaks loud and clearly, pleased with her disposition.

Morr simply nods in her direction, and she in turn slightly smiles and nods.

“Well I must say My Lady, one would never guess that you had never partaken in a Grand Adventure before looking on you” Hemmingbyrd exclaims.

“Thank you Hemmingbyrd… Is this horse mine?” she asks of the Dark Brown Steed tied to his horse.

“Oh… Yes… Indeed… This is Cho… Your Father’s Horse’s Son…” Hemmingbyrd replies as Agatha mounts with ease to all of their surprise.

“I do believe he would have liked you to have it” Hemmingbyrd explains.

She pets Cho on the side of the face “He is lovely indeed” she replies.

“Goodbye My Lady” Iliad exclaims with a bow “May Good Fortune–” she then interrupts him.

“Wait… Iliad… Aren’t you coming?” she questions.

With this the Fortress Guards, Jodan and Hemmingbyrd begin to laugh slightly.

Morr does not.

“He is but the Fool My Lady” Jodan pronounces.

“Oh no… He is much more than that” Agatha Proclaims as her eyes darken.

Iliad in great surprise looks up at her, almost tearing.

“No one loves the Fool… My Lady…” Iliad explains.

“No, Iliad shall remain here… As is custom” speaks Hemmingbyrd.

“I Love the Fool” Agatha speaks to all’s surprise.

“And I here by Pronounce him to be My Second Bishop… Or Magician as it were… To accompany The Blue Wizard Hemmingbyrd” she announces with conviction.

The Dark Guards simply look at one another, mumbling in discontent and confusion.

“Ahh, I knew we couldn’t trust a young girl to lead us…” Jodan speaks, then rides off.

This brings a subtle smile to Morr’s face.

Hemmingbyrd is shocked, but somewhat amused and curious.

“Very well… Fool… I mean… Iliad, get yourself a horse and supplies at once” he exclaims, and turns and rides off with a smile.

Iliad smiles, though he also looks petrified… He runs off and gets a horse and supplies while Agatha and Morr wait.

Which of course, is awkward at best.

Agatha tries to start a friendly conversation “Won’t the sun kill you?”.

Morr reaches for his leather skin flask which is full of blood.

“Only in your world…” he replies.

“Oh…” Agatha replies.

“I want to apologize for all of my silly questions last night Morr… I didn’t mean to offend you… You  might say I was a bit in shock by all of this” Agatha explains.

“You impressed me girl… And that’s not easy to do… Do not let us down” with this he rides off, leaving her alone.

Iliad soon rides forward awkwardly on a great white horse, much to large for him.

“It was the only one that they could ready quickly enough” Iliad proclaims as he tries to stop by Agatha, but the horse wont obey, and so he is its prisoner as it follows after the other horses leaving Agatha alone.

She takes one last look at the Dark Fortress of Doom, and turns and goes.

Chess With Agatha…

And The Dark Fortress of Doom

A Novel by DarkJade

CHAPTER FIVE (Part Two) – A Fool’s Heart

THE DARK FORTRESS OF DOOM

A HALLWAY

Iliad and Agatha make their way through the many dark corridors of The Dark Fortress of Doom.

“Wow… This place is…” Agatha speaks, causing Iliad to stop and look at her.

“Dark” she simply says.

“Well…” he replies and starts to walk again “Yes” he continues.

“I mean this place is really terrifying…” Agatha persists.

“Yes… Yes it is” he replies once more, this time sounding a bit irritated.

Then a realization suddenly brushes over Agatha…

“Wait a minute… Am I like… In an Evil Castle?? I mean… Are you guys like… The Bad Guys?” she questions Iliad profusely.

With this Iliad leaps towards her, and presses her up against one of the corridor walls… One of his fingers pressed firmly against her lips.

“Shhh… Not so loud” he whispers with urgency.

With this he peers down one of the corridors, and then the other.

“You mustn’t let Jodan and Morr here you speak that way…” he removes his finger.

“Jodan? and… Morr??” she questions.

“Here” with this Iliad removes a brightly yellow stoned ring from his left hand, and places it on her right hand’s ring finger…

“Keep this” he says, and then continues to make his way down the corridor, Agatha closing closely behind.

“Thank you?” she says questioningly.

At last they arrive at one of the many Guest Chambers “This shall be your room” Iliad planely states, as he theatrically gestures towards a black door, which has a gargoyle knocker on it.

Agatha shrugs, then hesitantly opens the door.

“Dinner shall be ready at eight… We eat fairly late here” Iliad explains.

Agatha looks back at Iliad “okay” with a pale look about her.

Iliad looks a bit frustrated and suddenly blurts out “You’re the Queen… It’s your Fortress… If you can defeat The Black Army of Norawyn that is…” now Agatha looks totally confused.

With this, Iliad shuffles her into her chambers, shuts the door behind him, and sits her upon the great four post bed which is in the chamber.

“Don’t you know anything about your own destiny??” he exclaims.

“Uhh… Destiny?” she replies.

“I have been communicating to you for weeks and weeks, have you not heard me??” he questions.

“Wait… That was you??” she blurts forth.

“You shall need Two Knights… You shall need Two Magicians?? Hemingbyrd being one… But you shall need a second” he exclaims.

“And two Rooks?” she questions half jokingly…

“No no no” he says as he grabs her arms and looks at her “Jodan and Morr are your Rooks”

“Not that there’s anything comforting about that” he lets go of her arms and stands.

“And what about you?” she questions.

“Me?” he replies surprised by the question “I am but a Fool… And no one loves a Fool…” he makes his way towards the door, then turns to face her once more “Right?”.

“Dinner at eight, a servant shall fetch you… Rest up your Highness… Tomorrow will be a busy day, and there’s still Dinner to be had” with this he leaves the chamber.

Chess With Agatha…

And The Dark Fortress of Doom

A Novel by DarkJade

CHAPTER FIVE (Part One) – The Coming of Agatha

THE DARK FORTRESS OF DOOM

THE BLUE WIZARD HEMMINGBYRD’S CHAMBERS

Iliad, The Dark Fortress of Doom’s Jester, is curled up under Hemmingbyrd’s desk, as before his eyes, in the middle of the room, a Giant Storm Ball of Blue Light swirls and crackles…

Within it… Blue Fire Light, thunder and lightning.

“CRACKKOOOM!!!” the thunder Cracks!

TWO MILES SOUTH WEST OF THE FORTRESS OF DOOM

THE ENCHANTED FOREST OF ILA’S MORN

As Hemmingbyrd faces Morr, who has just come upon him finding one of Arodos’s Six White Unicorns, as Arodos himself is a Black Unicorn…

Suddenly Morr looks off in the distance, and Hemmingbyrd looks to see what has grabbed his attention… In the distance, The Dark Fortress of Doom sits on its Mountain, and above it there is a Great Blue Storm Cloud.

“Great Scott! We must hurry” Hemmingbyrd proclaims and he quickly rides off… Jodan, who had not seen the Unicorn, suddenly rides by as well following Hemmingbyrd “QUICKLY MORR, to your Horse!!”.

Morr does not follow…

HEMMINGBYRD’S CHAMBERS

Suddenly from the middle of the Blue Storm Ball, steps a beautiful young girl… Hair of gold… Eyes of unearthly blue.

Iliad, in terror, continues to watch from beneath Hemmingbyrd’s Desk.

“My Lord” he speaks to himself.

It was Agatha.

Clad in her long black Pee coat/Trench coat, her vibrant purple scarf wrapped around her neck…

In her black Doc Martin boots she stomps forth…

In her right hand, she holds Agamemnon’s Cherry Red Cane…

Though she is left handed… But she does not know that yet.

Suddenly she takes note of Iliad underneath Hemmingbyrd’s desk, and slants her head just slightly…

Iliad tries to speak, but is unable to.

And suddenly the expression on her face goes from utter bewilderment, to cracking a slight smile… Or rather, a quarter smile.

Iliad is surprised by this…

SUDDENLY HEMINGBYRD BURSTS INTO THE ROOM!!

“My Lady!!” Hemmingbyrd wraps both arms around her small form, and squeezes her so hard, it’s as if he’s trying to “merge” with her.

“GASP!” she tries to breathe.

He then draws back, stretching both of his arms outwardly, his hands grasping both of her arms.

“Let me look at you…” he says with a grand smile, looking her up and down.

“Mmm, hmm… You bare the look of Elias indeed…” he proclaims.

He then steps a half inch from her face and gazes deeply into her eyes…

“The Glowing Blue Eyes of Bandoran… Mmm, hmm” he exclaims.

He then spins her around like a rag doll, lifting the back of her long jacket, and dark blue sweater underneath, revealing the most fair skin of her lower back.

“Hmm… That’s odd” he pulls down her coat and sweater and faces her towards him once more.

His strong clasp like hands grasping her arms once more…

…and makes note of a one fourth inch moon shaped mark by her left eye.

“Well, that explains it…” he proclaims.

Agatha is totally lost and bewildered at this point…

“You bare the marking of The Son’s Moon” he plainly states.

“The Son’s Moon?”  Agatha speaks her first words.

Hemmingbyrd’s mouth drops “You have the Emiltoray Tone as well??” these words fall blankly on Agatha.

He then lets go of her arms “Yessss…” he almost seems to hiss out.

“You used to be a man” he says, and then turns and walks towards the door.

Agatha is stunned by this.

Before Hemmingbyrd departs, he turns back towards her “In another time that is…”.

“Why… Thank you? I think” she replies.

“Most alarming, eh… Himdoob” are his last words, as he turns and leaves the Chamber.

“Himdoob?” she turns to look at Iliad for some kind of explanation.

Iliad stands and dusts himself off “It means–” he begins to say as he adjusts the three tips of his Jester Hat, which each have a bell… “BLING BLING BLING”.

“It means “Fool Take her to her chamber, so she might freshen up before dinner”” Iliad plainly states.

“You got all that from one bizarre word?”

“Indeed” he replies.

“We’ve known one another for a long time…” explains Iliad.

“I had no idea he even saw you down there” replies Agatha.

“Oh… Well… Hemmingbyrd sees all..” he says with a mock smile, as he reaches up and wiggles one of his bells.

“BLING BLING”.

“Now, come along…” he then leads her out into the Dark Hallway.
